The Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) is the highest authority in charge of regulating and overseeing food safety. Obtaining an FSSAI license is required for all Food Business Operators (FBOs). The license that the businessman is required to obtain is a common source of uncertainty or misunderstanding among FBOs. The FSSAI license establishes science-based standards for food goods and controls their manufacture, storage, distribution, sale, and import in order to ensure that safe and wholesome food is available to the country’s 130 million residents. The authority is also in charge of establishing a nationwide information network so that the general public, consumers, and others can get timely, accurate, and reliable information regarding food safety and cleanliness, as well as other matters of importance.

This article, on the other hand, will focus on the many types of food FSSAI licenses that the authority issues.

FSSAI, however, issues three different types of food licenses which are: 

 1. Central License 

 2. State License 

 3. Basic Registration 

 The three licenses, however, differ on the basis of the scale of operation of the food business which is being carried out. The following is detailed information on the three food licenses. 

 1. FSSAI Registration Central License: Importers, 100 percent export oriented units, big producers, operators in Central Government agencies, airports, seaports, and other food industry operators must get a Central Food License. The Central Government is the one who issues the licence. FBOs must also obtain a Central License for their central office, as well as if they operate in more than one state. As a result, it is primarily for businesses with yearly revenues of more than 20 crores.

 2. FSSAI Registration State License: Food business operators like small to medium-sized manufacturers, storage units, transporters, retailers, marketers, distributors etc. are however required to obtain the Fssai State License. The State License is issued by the State Government and it is important that you have operations in only 1 state, in order to obtain the State license. Therefore, these are mainly units with annual sales of over 120,000 rupees. 

 3. FSSAI Registration: As a result, FSSAI registration is necessary for food industry operators such as small food makers and small manufacturers, storage facilities, carriers, retailers, marketers, and distributors. The state government, on the other hand, issues the FSSAI registration. As a result, the FBO may be a state or registered licence, depending on its eligibility. As a result, the majority of these are units with yearly sales of up to 120,000 rupees.

The online application system allows food company owners to apply for registration and licences.

This is an institution under the control of the Government of India and the Department of Health and Family Affairs. FSSAI was established under the Food Safety Act of 2006. It is basically an organization made for protecting the health of the people. It promotes the health of the public through the supervision of this act.The FSSAI’s chairwoman is chosen by the central government from among those working in the field of home science. This accreditation is required for all producers, traders, and eateries.

 How to Apply for Registration? 

 1. For License: FBO’s are required to have a valid personal email ID and Mobile Number which should be kept active. 

 2. For registration: The Fssai license requires a valid personal email ID or mobile number 

3. The FBO name must be spelled correctly in your application, as it appears in your license. 

 4. When the application is successfully submitted, the system will generate a unique reference ID for the application. 

5 Print out the “confirmation” and “online application” and attach the required fees (if the payment method is a draft application) and the draft application for supplementary documents (checklist of reference documents) as part of the application.  How do I submit my application? 

1. Within 15 days after the online application date, the application must be submitted to the Government Agency / Food Safety Standards Office of India. If the deadline for submitting an online application is May 18, 2011, the application, fees, and supplementary documents must be submitted by June 2, 2011.

2. The online application form must be printed as part of the completed application form. Without the Online Application Form, your application will not be accepted or processed.
